Game suggestions

Postby USSGreatePier » 13 Oct 2011, 22:48

Seeing as there was no specific topic for this, I took the liberty of opening one. Maybe this will stimulate people to post their ideas for the game, subsequently get them rejected, feel sad and go cry in a corner (only joking :P)

Anyway, to start this topic off, I thought I'd address a fairly simple and straightforward matter; Pier's legendary stories...

We all know Pier was a big guy and carried around an equally big sword... Was that exaggerated by history? Probably not too much, but others things may have been slightly altered over time, whether on purpose or not. Knocking the heads off of the shoulders of 5 men in one fell swoop may be one of them... How did these stories come into existence? Well, probably by exaggeration via the medium of word of mouth. The fish you struggled to catch last year may become a shark if enough people keep telling the story at birthday parties (under the influence of alcohol). People like to tell interesting stories and exaggerations easily find their way into them.

The actual suggestion: Let Pier have one of his famous adventures in the game and after that have the civilian population you encounter talk about it and add the exaggerations... As in the mentioned example, Pier may have slain 5 guys with his sword in an epic struggle that lasted for an hour (just an example) and then have the populous talk about it as if it was over in mere seconds with Pier making those heads roll with just one swing of the sword...

This might be a good way to keep the game sort of realistic whilst also explaining how some of the less credible stories came to life. There's always some part of truth in any legend, but the tales of history are (probably) seldomly 100% acurate.

I am hoping the game will be some sort of action adventure like Darksiders or Zelda.
A real time action based fighting system in the Frysian lands!

And also, I've always been a big fan of free roaming games where you can make decisions on your own and do little sub quests unrelated to the main story line... Of course, there is a certain story line the game indeed needs to follow, since it's a tale from actual history, but the free roaming element is always great.

Its 5 o'clock, Pier wakes up.
as he looks out the window of his farm he yawns.
Climbing down the wooden ladder (which is very steap) he enters the kitchen located underneath his bedroom.
Quickly getting on his working clothes (dirty from the day before) and eating his plain bread breakfast fast.
5.20 hour: walking outside, he kisses his wife who is already awake and feeding the pigs.
Then he turns to the barn to get his horse and wagon, its a small wagon with two rods on both sides.
Pier quickly strings the wagon onto his horse and walks besides it, yelling to his wife: wyf ik gjin nei Arum foar fretten! (I'm off to Arum for food)
When he nears Arum after a walk of 16 minutes, he sees his friend Sikko running and jumping in Sikko's farmland
(Sikko is a grain farmer and lives just outside Arum near the road thats often been used by the Monks, calld mountsewei by the locals)
Pier shout's: Hú Sikko wat hast do yn'e harses krigen!! (He Sikko What's wrong?)
Sikko Answers: Die ferdomde roeken ferniele myn fjild (Those damn crows are tearing up my field)
Pier sit net te gnizen smarge fetpoede en help my ris (Pier stop laughing, c'mon help me)
Pier gets his slingshot and and shoots 3 crows out of the sky and the rest hastly whent away.

Intro of the game using ingame grafs for the intromovie.
Learning the healing skill while eating his breakfast: Apples Melons Meat Fish Etc.
Learning the conversation tools while speaking to Sikko
learning the aiming skill in Sikko's grainfield
Obtaing his first weapon Slingshot: Knife Stick/Staff Sword Bow & Arrow Etc.
Also learning the navigation tool that pointed to Arum
Maybe unlocking the collection mode searching different locations for items
Apples: Pier's Farm 5/5, Sikko's Field: 3/3
Wooden Crate's, Old Pieces of Pottery, Pages of Books Etc.

That's my idea of a great start feel free to judge me spelling (i don't care, My Frysian is far better)
Anyone up for a better idea or an adding to my story??

Spazz is actually not too far off. The intro to the game will be quite different, but we had about the same things in mind when it comes to the first couple of missions. Pier will however do something a bit more heroic that ties in with (one of the many) stories about him :-)

I've got an idea for a pretty original skill system, but I have a question about that first.
Will you level up in the game and then get skill points for new skills/moves like most games? (not even sure if you have plans for a skill system actually)

Some games also have 2 ways of playing... You can either finish your quest quickly and move on to the next, or you can explore the entire map during your quest and find cool items, hidden places, easter eggs, more story lines, information in books and scrolls you found/bought/stole, etc... Wouldn't mind such an element in the game either :)

The game is still on. The Kickstarter campaign was intended for the funding of promotion and additional features. I'm sure the developers will announce a number of things in the coming week concerning the future of the game. Things like which features will / will not be added to the game, donation & pre-order info, etc. But I'm sure the game is definitely on :)

Yeah I like how that song fits with the medieval style of the game :P
Now I'm picturing a big burly weaponsmith hammering on his anvil with a big ghettoblaster in the background...

I guess I can contribute with ideas once the demo is out. As I'm not familiar with the legend.

And will there be an area where you can buy items? I suggest dokkum with it's city walls and bridges and bolwurken(windmills.) It would be a very nice city because of it's rich history with bonifatius ( In the direction of a little side-quest that explains the history. ) It is also a good piece of frisian history that is never before included in a game.

Shops would be interesting, though my guess would be there won't be much you can/should buy... Pier's army would probably gather quite a lot of goods from their raids on Dutch ships and coastal towns... But items like food ('health') and a visit to a blacksmith (for repairs) might be nice... I wonder what the devs think about shops and such.

Shops will be there, but not like that you can browse for items and buy what you'd like to have. Shops will be more in the form of side-quests. For example, the blacksmith is robbed and he asks Pier to help him by retrieving the stolen goods. If he succeeds, the blacksmith rewards him with, for example, improved gear.

Sounds good enough... This is probably not the kinda game where you should buy new armor and weapons and stuff along the way.

You just bought a hydro foil kit for raiding skûtsje "Smarriche baarch"!

Well, I think the reason to be careful of not going in-depth too much is obvious, but at one point there were ideas of upgrading your army as well. This could have been done by upgrading armor, weapons and perhaps even methods of transport. But alas, we need to keep things simple. I don't think it will be a big problem in the end though :-)

This game revolves (as it should :)) around the story of Pier... And upgrading stuff all the time is probably not very historically accurate, unlike the rest of the game, I presume. They probably used mainly second hand stuff, raided stuff and most likely not a hell of a lot of gear specifically produced for this particular freedom fight. So, I won't miss it. Though, I must admit, I love games with extensive armor and weapons shops (Lineage II, Elder Scrolls series, Dungeon Siege series, etc.). But it'd be out of place here, I think.
