Forum Esentials

Now that we have a full time person looking after the forums, I wanted to bring up something that has annoyed me for a while. One thing that I noticed when I first joined up here was the alarming absence of smilies! Image

I know they are currently turned off by the board software, but these are absolutely essential in allowing a poster to properly express their feelings and emotions. It is way to easy to misunderstand context, and these little graphics really help to convey proper understanding of just what was meant. That importance is even more magnified on a forum such as this one that has members who speak multiple languages.

Standard chat emoticons work, but they are less effective, far less fun and not near as expressive as some of the graphic or animated icons can be. If you want a thriving community, the first thing you need to provide is a way to have fun!

Excellent point! I'll do what I can, but unfortunately that isn't much at the moment because right now Timen is the only one with all the high adminrights, and he's in Cuba on a holiday. As soon as he's back I'll talk to him about it.

Thanks mate, I have a few other ideas as well, but I will try not to pile them all on you at once. ;)

One idea I had to try and spark some forum activity is a design a smilie contest, that is of course if we can convince Timen to allow them. I think it would be great to have a bunch of Pier related smilies about the forum. There are also plenty of good smiley packs available, some with medieval themes that would fit right in as well

I like your thinking!
Having a real Pier-smiley sounds like a necessity, doesn't it? Pascal, our artist, thinks I'm annoying already (been here only a week) so I didn't dare asking him for one. As soon as Timen gets back I'll see what we can organize.

Good idea indeed... The text smilies we've been using convey the message, but they aren't very flexible... And I'm just too lazy to include smileys with a full URL, hehe... I'll dig into my smiley collection to find a few medievalish things... I'm sure I have a bunch of appropriate ones.

Hideous succes!
Still working on it.

Edit:
Well, that's all I can do for now. At least we have these, but I can't add new ones. Waiting for Timen!

I was bored, so I did a little playing, I "borrowed" couple of images from the front page. I hope Pascal doesn't mind to much!

Well as far as our smiley contest goes, you're definitely taking the lead :P I especially like the left one, the right one has the same problem all the stock smileys have as well with the white pixels surrounding it. That's what you get with a dark forumbackground I guess...

You would think though a forum software developer in this day and age would make the smiles properly though.

Yeah, those little pixels can be a real pain! I took a bit more time on the big guy cause I wanted him to really look as good as possible, I knew the archer was going to give me problems.

When I get some more free time, I am thinking about trying an actual animation, but I really don't have much experience. :?

That takes a lot of time, haha... Well, it takes me a long time anyway  But it's fun to do, heh... It's been a while since I did emoticon animation...

You could always record your own face and then shrink the video. Shouldn't take that long!

Then I'm glad it's a 'just before' picture and not a 'just after'
