Great Pier and you

Tell me, what is it with Great Pier and you? Why do you like him? Is it just that he's a complete bad-ass, or are you a total history-nut? Maybe you are from Friesland yourself and you are just really proud of one of your folk heroes?

I for one think I'm a bit of a combination of that. I like history and heraldry and I like that the game is telling a piece of my own countries history (despite being not a Frisian myself). And of course, Pier is a badass! C'mon, everybody likes a bad-ass, right?

Oh and I like that it's a game. I like games. And books. This couldn't be any better for me.

For me, I have no idea who he is. The lore etc. is forgin to me. That's why I love the idea of this game so much. It lets me explore a world which is very rarely even thought about when it comes to gaming.

I must admit, before this game came along I never heard of Great Pier as well. I'm from the opposite side of the Netherlands and there nobody knows him. But when I heard the story I was sold. There's so much to it, a Hollywood-worthy hero, drama, action and struggle. Even I am looking forward to it! :P

I always wondered why there's no movie about Pier... There's plenty of story to work with and tons of drama and action to be had...

Anyway, I'm originally from Fryslân myself. I currently live in another part of the Netherlands, in what used to be part of Magna Frisia (Fryslân at its biggest back in the day when it was an independent country). I'm just keeping an eye on things here so we can easily reconquer this place again in due time *cough*

My point is, being from Fryslân originally myself gives me a link to Pier. Next to that, I'm a nut for Frisian history, ancient battles, true heroes and exacted revenge in general :) So, every reason for me to love the stories about Pier. To combine this epic legend with a video game is just epic on its own.

Being proud of where you come from is a bit weird in the end... I mean, it's just a patch of dirt. In Fryslân's case a patch of dirt with some water. Being proud of dirt is weird. Still, having Frisian blood coursing through my veins, I cannot help but feeling a little proud anyway, even though the days of Magna Frisia and independence are far behind us. We're slowly regaining a few symbolic glories of old in the shape of having the name of the province of Friesland changed officially to Fryslân, Frisian becoming the nations official 2nd langauge, more room for the Frisian language in daily life, more Frisian language in modern education (back in my schooldays it was appaling) and so on... (Now all we need is our own king again, an army and a lifetime supply of dümkes and we're good to go :P) To make a long story even longer: it's a brilliant game concept which will definitely help to put Fryslân on the map a bit more and spread the stories of Pier of whom we can all be proud!

He was actually featured in the old tv-series Floris. I haven't watched it myself (yet), but I've heard his portrayal in the series is that of a bandit. Probably the Dutchmen point of view :)

Edit:
Found it, here he is:

True :) And as a sucker for those kinds of series, I have all the episodes. Even legally on DVD  Yes, really!

And indeed, the portrayal of Pier in that series isn't exactly what you'd want to see. If they gave that villain a different name and left out all the Friesland references in his lines, it would be just fine, haha...

Thanks for reminding me anyway, Bram :) I'll have to check out the entire Floris series again soon... It's been a while.

My dad used to tell his story to me as a child, and when I heard triangle is going to make a game about him I started to dig a bit deeper into his story and the history of Frisia itself.
